Domain: Hyphens or Not?

Friday, April 25, 2008

I always wondered which one is the best for SEO, whether a domain name with hyphens or not. A lot of webmasters did argue about this in webmaster forums all over the world. This factor has always make me careful in buying a domain for SEO purposes.

From survey that I made in a popular webmaster forum, this is what I get:

1) It is important to have hyphens for a keyword that is more than a word.
2) Hyphens or not hyphens, both have the same impact.
3) Keyword in a domain doesn't important at all.

These are just some of the opinions I got from webmasters around the world. But, you can't just believe them, action and experiment is always important in SEO.

But for me, after looking at several 'famous' keywords in Google, like 'make money', 'work from home', 'home business ideas'. The owners of the first page on the result doesn't have those keyword at their domain.

For instance, at this time when this post is written, the first website in Google SERP for the keyword 'make money' is 5xmom.com. The website owner doesn't implement the word 'make money' on its domain name. At the same time, MakeMoney.com is available. I didn't say that it doesn't contribute to SEO at all, but what's the most important thing is your off page optimization strategy.

Off page optimization strategies include exchanging link (have your link in a higher PR website would be better), article marketing and directory submission.
